TL;DR: In your first Nether mining session, focus on quartz (XP + building), soul sand (for wart farms), glowstone (for respawn anchors + potions), and netherrack (free building material). Don't mine gold ore yet unless you need it. Ancient debris comes much later.
Your first mining session in the Nether should be short, focused, and productive.
Here is what to prioritize and why.
What to always grab (first sessions)
Nether quartz ore — The orange flecked gray stone. Mine it with any pickaxe. Each block drops 2-5 quartz crystals, which are worth a lot of XP. For early players, mining 32 quartz blocks can get you 3-4 XP levels. Also the quartz blocks themselves are good for decoration.
Soul sand / soul soil — The slow-walking dark blocks in Soul Sand Valley biomes. Mine 16-32 and bring it back. You need it to grow Nether wart for potions, and it's free and everywhere.
Glowstone — The yellow cluster on the ceiling. Mine 16 blocks minimum. 1 block of glowstone = 4 glowstone dust = charges for your respawn anchor. Also useful as lighting.
Netherrack — The red ubiquitous stone. You don't need to actively mine it — you'll collect it naturally. But if you need more for building, it's the fastest-breaking stone in the game.
What to skip for now
Nether gold ore — Drops 2-6 gold nuggets (not ingots). 9 nuggets = 1 ingot. Unless you're specifically building a gold supply, leave it and focus on better materials.
Magma blocks — Hard to collect without getting burned. Skip unless you have a specific project.
Ancient debris — You will know when you're ready for this. It requires fire resistance, bed-mining technique, and a deeper Nether trip. Not for first sessions.
Session length
A good first session: 15-20 minutes. Return before you run out of food or get too far from your portal.
What you should come home with after 15 minutes:
- 2-4 stacks of quartz (64-128 pieces)
- 16-32 soul sand
- 16 glowstone
- A rough idea of what biomes are near your portal
Safe mining habits
Mine sideways, not down. The Nether has random lava pockets. Mining straight down breaks through into lava. Always mine in a horizontal direction and check above/below separately.
Place a torch before you advance. One torch per 8 blocks prevents you from getting turned around in the dark.
Note your portal coordinates before going deep. You should have them written down already. Check them now.
Come back with health above 6 hearts. Never push to zero. The Nether keeps punishing tired players.
Common mistakes
- Going too deep on the first session. 50 blocks from your portal is plenty for now.
- Mining everything. Focused mining is faster than scattered mining.
- No food. The Nether drains hunger faster than the Overworld because of all the combat encounters.
- No torches. You will get turned around in a cave within 5 minutes without them.
A closing thought
The first few mining sessions teach you the Nether's rhythm. It's slower than the Overworld. Every resource requires a decision. That's the point — the Nether asks you to think before you dig.
