Lighting a Nether Base — What Actually Keeps Mobs Away (and What Doesn’t)

TL;DR: Torches, lanterns, and glowstone reduce spawns of most hostile Nether mobs, the same idea that works in the Overworld. But not every Nether mob follows that rule — Piglins in particular can show up in fully lit bastions and nether wastes no matter how bright you make the place. Lighting is one layer of a safe base, not the whole plan.

Why lighting works (mostly)

In the Overworld, hostile mobs need dark spaces to spawn. Light a cave, light a field, and fewer zombies and skeletons show up there. The Nether borrows a version of that same rule for several of its mobs — keep an area lit and fewer hostiles will spawn inside it.

That's why a well-lit base still matters even though the Nether has no day and night cycle. There's no sunrise coming to clear things out. Whatever light you place is doing all the work, all the time.

What lighting actually stops

Placing torches, lanterns, or glowstone around your base and the paths leading to it cuts down on random hostile spawns nearby — the same logic you'd use to light a mining tunnel back home. A few good light sources placed at the entrances and along walkways go a lot further than a bright wall of glowstone piled in one spot. Spread the light out instead of stacking it.

What lighting does not stop

This is the part a lot of guides skip. Piglins spawn in Nether Wastes and inside Bastion Remnants regardless of how bright the area is — they're not following the same darkness rule other hostile mobs use. You can floodlight a bastion courtyard and piglins will still be there. That's normal, not a bug in your lighting.

Ghasts float and shoot fireballs from a distance, so a lit floor doesn't stop one from finding your base if it can see you from the air. And Striders spawn on lava regardless of lighting, since they're not hostile in the first place.

None of that means lighting is pointless — it just means lighting solves one problem (random ground-level hostile spawns) and not every problem. Pair it with walls, a door, and some distance from open lava for an actually safe base.

Picking your light sources

  • Torches — cheap, easy, available from the start. Good for early bases and pathways.
  • Glowstone — bright, mined in the Nether itself, and doubles as a building material that fits the theme.
  • Lanterns — hang them from ceilings or fence posts for a cleaner look than torches stuck on walls.
  • Soul lanterns / soul torches — made with soul soil or soul sand instead of regular sand, these burn with a cool blue flame instead of orange. They give off a little less light than the regular version, but they match a Soul Sand Valley base perfectly and they're the better choice if you want your build to look intentional instead of just bright.

A simple lighting pass for your base

  1. Light the inside first — every room, every hallway, no dark corners.
  2. Light the entrance and the first several blocks of any path leading up to your door.
  3. Spread torches or lanterns every few blocks rather than clustering them — even coverage beats one bright patch.
  4. Add a door. Most Nether mobs that walk (as opposed to Ghasts, which float) can't open doors, so a lit room with a closed door is genuinely safer than a lit room with an open frame.
  5. Remember bastions and nether wastes will still have piglins around no matter what you do with light there — plan your route through those biomes with that in mind, not around it.

Closing thought

Lighting a Nether base is worth doing — it's cheap, it looks good, and it genuinely cuts down on random hostile spawns near your build. Just don't treat it as a force field. A lit base with a closed door and some distance from lava and bastions is a safe base. A lit base standing wide open in the middle of a nether wastes biome is still a base next to piglins.
