Fire Resistance: What the Potion Stops in the Nether (and What It Doesn’t)

TL;DR: A Potion of Fire Resistance makes you immune to fire damage for 3 minutes (8 minutes if you add Redstone). That covers lava, fire, magma blocks and Blaze fireballs. It does not stop a Ghast's fireball or a Blaze's melee hit. You brew it from an Awkward Potion and a Magma Cream. It is a safety net with a timer, not a reason to go swimming in lava.

What Fire Resistance stops

Fire Resistance is a status effect that gives you complete immunity to fire damage. That includes:

  • Lava. You can cross it without taking damage while the timer runs.
  • Fire on the ground, and campfires.
  • Magma blocks. The ones that burn your feet.
  • Blaze fireballs. The small fireballs a Blaze shoots at you.
  • Fire charges.

It also cancels the extra burning damage from a sword with Fire Aspect or a bow with Flame, though the arrow or sword hit itself still lands.

What it does not stop

This part matters in the Nether:

  • A Ghast's fireball. A direct hit and the explosion both hurt you normally. The game does not count them as fire damage. The fire a Ghast fireball leaves on the ground is blocked, but the blast is not.
  • A Blaze's melee hit. When a Blaze gets close and hits you instead of shooting, that is ordinary damage, and the potion does nothing about it.
  • Anything that is not fire. Falls, arrows, a Piglin Brute's axe and other mob hits all hurt as usual.

So do not count on the potion to save you from a Ghast. It blocks the fire a Ghast leaves behind, but not the hit or the blast. Fire Resistance does not make the Nether safe. It stops lava and fire from hurting you, and only while the timer runs.

How long it lasts

  • 3 minutes from a basic potion.
  • 8 minutes if you add Redstone Dust to the potion in a brewing stand.

When the timer ends, the protection ends right away. Keep an eye on the effect icon on your screen, and head for solid ground well before it runs out. In Java Edition you stay on fire for about 15 seconds after you leave lava, so get out with more than 15 seconds left on the timer.

How to brew it

  1. Build a brewing stand. It takes 1 Blaze Rod and 3 stone-tier blocks, such as cobblestone. (See Blaze Farming for getting rods.) The stand needs Blaze Powder as fuel. One piece of powder fuels 20 brewing steps, and each step (Nether Wart, Magma Cream, Redstone) uses one, which is enough for about 30 basic Fire Resistance potions or 18 of the 8:00 kind. One rod makes 2 pieces.
  2. Make Awkward Potions. Put Water Bottles in the stand and add one Nether Wart. That turns the whole batch into Awkward Potions. (See the Nether Wart Quick Brew Guide.)
  3. Add Magma Cream. Put one Magma Cream into the stand. The whole batch becomes Potions of Fire Resistance (3:00).
  4. Optional: add Redstone Dust to the finished potions for the 8:00 version. This uses no extra Magma Cream.

One ingredient brews the whole batch, which is up to three bottles. So one Magma Cream gives you up to three Fire Resistance potions. You do not need one cream per potion.

Medium and large Magma Cubes sometimes drop Magma Cream, and small ones never do (see Magma Cube Combat). You can also craft it from Blaze Powder plus a Slimeball.

Things that catch people out

  • It protects you, not a dropped stack. Items you drop in lava still burn up. Only netherite items float and survive.
  • Lava is slow and foggy. You move sideways through lava at about half your normal speed, and the view is dense even with the potion. Fire Resistance helps you see a bit better under lava, but it is still foggy, so you cannot see far.
  • Java and Bedrock differ slightly. This guide follows Java Edition. In Java you can still catch fire while protected, you just take no damage from it. If the potion runs out while you are still burning, the burning starts to hurt. In Bedrock the effect stops you from catching fire at all.
  • Some mobs are already immune. Blazes, Ghasts, Magma Cubes, Striders, Wither Skeletons, Zoglins and Zombified Piglins already take no damage from fire or lava, so the potion changes nothing for them.

Fire Protection is a different thing

Fire Protection is an armor enchantment, not a potion. It reduces fire damage instead of blocking all of it: 8% per level, so 32% at level IV on a single piece, and the reduction adds up across your armor pieces, up to a limit. It also shortens how long you burn. Like the potion, it does not help against a Ghast's blast or a Blaze's melee hit. They work well together, but one does not replace the other.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking Fire Resistance protects you from Ghast fireballs. It does not. Hit the fireball back with your sword instead (see Ghast Survival).
  • Letting the timer run out while still in or over lava.
  • Carrying valuables over lava with the timer running low. If it runs out and you fall in, anything you drop burns up.
  • Brewing one potion at a time. One ingredient does the whole batch of three.
