Zoglins: What Happens When a Hoglin Leaves the Nether

TL;DR: A Zoglin is what a Hoglin turns into if it leaves the Nether — through a portal, into the Overworld or the End — and stays there for about 15 seconds. Unlike a Hoglin, a Zoglin can't be scared off with warped fungus, doesn't fear fire, and attacks almost everything, all the time. It's rarer to meet one, but it's the more dangerous of the two.

What it does

Zoglins don't spawn on their own anywhere in the world — every single one used to be a Hoglin. The moment a Hoglin steps out of the Nether and stays for about 15 seconds, it converts on the spot: bigger tusks, a hollowed-out look, and a completely different attitude. For the first few seconds after converting it looks a little dizzy (a harmless visual effect), and then it's fully awake and hostile.

A converted Zoglin attacks almost every mob it sees — players, villagers, most animals — and it doesn't stop to think about it or wait to be provoked. It fights with the same head-down charge and knockback a Hoglin uses, so the attack itself isn't new. What's new is that it never backs down and never runs away.

How to handle it

The one thing that works on a Hoglin — holding up warped fungus to scare it — does nothing to a Zoglin. It has lost that fear completely. If you're facing one, treat it like straightforward melee combat: keep your distance where you can, use knockback to control the fight, and don't get boxed in against a wall where its charge can pin you.

Zoglins are also immune to fire and lava damage, which a Hoglin is not. That means you can't rely on fire to finish one off, and if you were planning to push it into lava, expect it to just walk back out.

Best uses / Best tips

The real lesson here is prevention: watch where you fight Hoglins near a portal. If one gets knocked through into the Overworld or the End during a fight and you don't finish it off fast, it'll convert into a Zoglin and follow you around out there instead — somewhere you probably weren't expecting Nether combat. If you do end up with a Zoglin loose in your Overworld base, treat it like any other tough hostile mob and clear it out before it wanders near animals or a village.

Lore color

Every Hoglin that crosses over changes. The tusks stay the same shape, but the eyes go flat, and whatever made it snort and stomp and chase off a warped fungus stick just isn't in there anymore. It doesn't remember being afraid of anything. That's the part that should worry you.

Common mistakes

  • Knocking a Hoglin through a portal mid-fight and not following up right away
  • Trying to use warped fungus on a Zoglin, expecting it to work like it does on a Hoglin
  • Assuming fire or lava will finish one off, since Hoglins aren't fire-immune but Zoglins are
  • Getting cornered — a Zoglin never retreats, so neither side is going to back off first
