Two new guides this week, one about a potion most players brew and few understand, and one about the friendliest thing the Nether has added in years. We also corrected two older guides that had real mistakes in them.
New guides
Fire Resistance: What the Potion Stops covers what it protects you from (lava, fire, magma blocks and Blaze fireballs) and the two things it does not: the hit and blast from a Ghast's fireball, and a Blaze hitting you up close. It lasts 3 minutes, or 8 with Redstone Dust, and the guide explains how to get out of lava with time to spare. It also covers the batch rule that trips people up: one Magma Cream brews all three bottles in a stand, so you never need one per potion.
Dried Ghasts and Happy Ghasts follows a harmless block from a Soul Sand Valley fossil, through about 20 minutes in water, to a baby ghastling and then a happy ghast you can put a harness on and ride, with room for up to four players. The one surprise is that you hatch it in the Overworld, because water from a bucket vanishes in the Nether. It follows Java Edition, where dried ghasts arrived in 1.21.6.
Corrections
We checked two older guides against the game's reference data and rewrote both.
What Drops from Each Nether Mob had seven real mistakes:
- It said to make a Potion of Regeneration with a Ghast Tear and a Fermented Spider Eye. That makes a harmful potion. The recipe is a Ghast Tear added to an Awkward Potion.
- It put the Ghast Tear drop at about 30%. It is about 1 in 2.
- It said Hoglins are the only food in the Nether, and that carrying Warped stems keeps them away. Neither is true. Hoglins back away from a Warped Fungus placed on the ground, and that does not help once one has already picked you as a target.
- It called a Wither Skeleton's Stone Sword drop "common". It is 8.5%.
- It said bigger Magma Cubes drop more Magma Cream. Small ones drop none, and medium and large ones share one chance.
- It said Blazes are always near a spawner. They can also spawn on their own inside a fortress.
- It said Fire Resistance "makes the Nether survivable". It does not stop a Ghast's fireball or a Blaze's close-up hit.
We also removed a line that nudged readers toward running after a tear that fell in lava. Losing an item is always better than going in after it.
The Nether Wart Quick Brew Guide had these:
- It said you need 3 Nether wart for your first batch. One wart brews all three bottles.
- It had the brewing stand's crafting layout wrong, and said the bottles change color when they become Awkward Potions. They do not.
- It said a Healing potion restores 4 hearts. It restores 2.
- Worst of all, it said that with Fire Resistance "you can stand in lava and laugh at it". We should not have written that. The potion is a safety net with a timer, not a swimming pass, and the guide now says so.
If you followed either old guide, sorry. Thanks for reading closely.
See you in the Nether
The world is still there if you want a quiet walk between the campfires, and the Complete Nether Guide has a route through everything above.
