TL;DR: Nether fun facts, clean jokes, and a 10-question trivia quiz. No learning required. Just enjoyable if you know the Nether.
Fun facts
1. Ghasts don't sink when they die in the Nether — they float, which is also why their tears despawn when they die over lava. The tear was never going to reach the ground.
2. The Nether is exactly 128 blocks tall — from Y=0 (bedrock floor) to Y=128 (bedrock ceiling). Standing on top of the ceiling is technically outside the normal play area.
3. In the Bedtime in the Nether lore, the Ghasts cried for the Piglins. In the actual game, Ghast sounds were recorded from the game designer's sleeping cat. Both the lore version and the real version are kind of beautiful.
4. Zombie Piglins were renamed "Zombified Piglins" in the 2020 Nether Update. They're the same mob, just more accurately named.
5. The Strider is one of the only mobs in Minecraft that looks miserable when it's supposed to be fine (shivering on solid ground) and calm when it's in a situation that would kill a player (walking on lava).
6. Blazes can see through walls. If a Blaze is in the room next to you in a Fortress, it can target you through solid stone.
7. Hoglins are technically "boars" not pigs. The design was inspired by warthogs.
8. Ancient Debris is technically not a "rare" ore by Minecraft's spawn rate rules — its maximum clusters per chunk are the same as some other ores — it just generates at a very low absolute quantity per cluster. The scarcity is intentional.
9. Piglins always pick up gold and look at it for 6 seconds before deciding what to give back. During those 6 seconds, they hold the gold ingot and inspect it.
10. Warped Forests have the lowest hostile-mob density of any Nether biome. The only hostile mobs that naturally spawn there are Endermen. Endermen are technically hostile (they attack when looked at) but they're passive if you don't look at them. So: the Warped Forest is functionally peaceful.
11. You can make a portal with only 10 obsidian blocks by skipping the corners.
12. The Nether biome names in the game code are: nether_wastes, crimson_forest, warped_forest, soul_sand_valley, basalt_deltas. No periods or capital letters.
13. Glowstone generates on the Nether ceiling in clusters of 2-8 blocks. Every single cluster is different in shape. No two are alike.
14. A Piglin that zombifies in the Overworld can never turn back. The change is permanent.
15. The Nether Portal makes a distinct sound when active — a low, ambient bubbling. Players who've played Minecraft long enough can hear that sound and know they're near a portal without seeing it.
16. There is no "Nether weather." It never rains in the Nether. The fire and lava are constants — no storm makes them worse.
17. Crying Obsidian was originally a block in very early Minecraft versions, removed, then re-added in the 2020 Nether Update with a new purpose. Its original function no longer exists.
18. Soul Sand sinks you slightly into the block as you walk, causing the slowdown. Soul Soil doesn't have this depression — which is why it doesn't slow you down, even though it looks similar.
19. Ancient Debris is completely blast-proof. TNT detonating next to it leaves it untouched. This is why TNT mining for ancient debris works — the TNT clears the surrounding netherrack but leaves the debris floating.
20. The word "Nether" is an archaic English word meaning "lower" or "beneath." It's used in modern English in phrases like "nether regions" meaning underground. Mojang picked the right name.
