Nether vs Overworld — A Side-by-Side Comparison Chart

TL;DR: A reference table of 30 mechanics that work differently (or identically) in the Nether vs Overworld. Print it, tape it to the wall, check back when something unexpected happens.

Invisibility potions Hide player completely Don't affect Piglins' gold check

The ones that surprise people most

Invisibility potions don't prevent Piglin aggro — Piglins check for gold armor through invisibility. Wear gold even when invisible.

Lava moves faster — In the Nether, lava spreads 7 blocks wide and 8 deep per update. This is why a lava leak underground in the Nether is much more dangerous than one in the Overworld.

Phantom protection — If you haven't slept and you go to the Nether, you're safe from Phantoms there. Phantoms never spawn in the Nether. This is not a good strategy for avoiding sleep — but it's a real mechanic.

Clocks and daylight sensors read zero — The Nether is always midnight as far as these items are concerned. A clock in the Nether just spins. A daylight sensor reads 0 constantly. Don't base any redstone on daylight sensor readings in the Nether.

Common mistakes informed by this table

  • Trying to water your crops in the Nether — No water means no growing.
  • Using a compass to navigate — It points to (0,0), not your portal.
  • Forgetting lava is faster — A small lava pocket breach floods a Nether base much faster than an Overworld mine.
  • Relying on invisibility near Piglins — Gold check bypasses invisibility.
