TL;DR: Build 1: The Corner Shelter (15 min, 32 cobblestone, fits in a wall). Build 2: The Elevated Platform (15 min, 48 cobblestone, no ground contact). Build 3: The Watch Room (15 min, 64 cobblestone, has a viewing slit). All three work. All three are fast.
Three builds. 15 minutes each. No decoration required. Each one has a specific purpose.
Build 1 — The Corner Shelter
Purpose: Fast emergency shelter that blends into terrain.
Materials: 32 cobblestone, 1 door (wood is fine — it won't burn).
How to build:
- Find a netherrack wall.
- Mine 5 blocks deep into the wall horizontally.
- Mine 3 blocks high (your head height + 1 above).
- Mine 3 blocks wide.
- Place a door at the entrance.
- Place 2 torches on the ceiling.
Done. This room is fireproof (netherrack walls). The door blocks Ghasts (they can't open doors). You have a 5-block deep shelter that takes 8 minutes to build.
Why it works: The netherrack walls do most of the work. You're not building a house — you're hollowing one out of existing terrain.
Build 2 — The Elevated Platform
Purpose: Observation post + safe landing zone above lava.
Materials: 48 cobblestone (or netherrack), 1 ladder (or 4 blocks for stairs).
How to build:
- Find a spot 10+ blocks above a lava sea.
- Build a 3-block pillar from a nearby rock surface up to height.
- Add a 5×5 platform at the top.
- Add a 1-block wall around the edge (prevents walking off).
- Build a ladder or stair access from below.
Takes 12 minutes. The height keeps Piglins from reaching you. Ghasts can still see you, but the 5×5 platform gives you room to dodge.
Why it works: Elevation is free defense. Most mobs can't reach an elevated platform easily, and you get a clear view of the surrounding Nether to spot threats.
Build 3 — The Watch Room
Purpose: A safe base with controlled visibility — you can see out, but Ghasts can't easily see in.
Materials: 64 cobblestone, 1 door, 2 glass panes (optional but useful).
How to build:
- Build a 5×5×3 cobblestone box on flat ground.
- Leave a door-sized gap at one end.
- Place the door.
- On one wall, place 2 glass panes in a 2×1 horizontal slit at eye level.
- Cover the rest of the wall with cobblestone.
The slit allows you to see out — specifically at a limited angle. Ghasts at 64 blocks need a direct line of sight to aggro. The slit gives you a limited forward view without exposing you to the full 360° sky.
Takes 14 minutes.
Why it works: Line-of-sight control. You choose what you can see. The solid roof means Ghasts above you can't target you through the ceiling.
Which one should you build?
- Traveling through an area: Build 1 (fastest, uses terrain).
- Scouting from above before exploring: Build 2.
- Setting up a longer-term base: Build 3.
All three are good. All three are fast. The mistake is not building any of them.
Common mistakes
- No door. Piglins will walk into a doorless shelter.
- Building too small. You need 3-block height minimum to move around without crouching.
- Using wood for walls or floor. Ghast fireballs ignite wood. Use cobblestone, netherrack, or blackstone.
A closing thought
The Nether punishes players who try to wing it. It rewards players who build before they explore. These three builds exist so you always have somewhere to be that isn't "exposed in the middle of the Nether."
