Action: You killed a Ghast. Grab the tear before it falls into lava. 5-minute despawn. Move fast.
TL;DR:
- Every Nether mob drops something useful — knowing what unlocks what matters.
- Ghast tears — regen potions. Blaze rods — brewing stands and fuel. Wither skulls — boss fight.
- Magma Cream unlocks Fire Resistance potions, which makes the Nether survivable.
- Zombified Piglins drop gold nuggets passively if you kill them (carefully).
- Hoglins drop the only renewable food source in the Nether.
- Items on the ground despawn after 5 minutes — collect fast after a kill.
The Nether is full of things trying to hurt you. That is the obvious part. The less obvious part is that almost every mob in the Nether drops something that unlocks a different capability — a potion you could not brew before, a fuel source you needed, a crafting component for a major item.
Knowing what drops from what, and what you can do with it, turns combat from something you survive into something you plan for.
Here is the full list.
Ghast — Ghast Tear, Gunpowder
Ghasts drop 0-1 Ghast Tears and 0-2 Gunpowder.
Ghast Tears are rare — about a 30% drop rate — and they fall. If your fight happens over lava (which most Ghast fights do), expect to lose some. Use a bow with high range and try to fight from solid ground when you can position yourself there.
What you do with Ghast Tears: brew them into Mundane Potions as a base, or combine with a Fermented Spider Eye to make Potions of Regeneration. Regen potions are one of the stronger healing options in the game.
Gunpowder goes into Splash Potions later — worth keeping.
Blaze — Blaze Rod
Blazes drop 0-1 Blaze Rods. Looting increases this.
Blaze Rods are one of the most important Nether drops in the game. Craft one into a Brewing Stand and you have the entire potion system unlocked. Grind it into Blaze Powder for Brewing Stand fuel and one of the Strength potion ingredients. You need at least 2 rods to get started — 1 for the stand, 1 for powder.
Blazes are in Nether fortresses, always near or above a spawner. Fighting them is harder than most early Nether encounters, but the rods are worth the effort.
Wither Skeleton — Coal, Sword, Skull
Wither Skeletons drop Coal (common), Stone Swords (common), and Wither Skeleton Skulls (rare — about 2.5% base drop rate, higher with Looting).
Three skulls plus 4 Soul Sand summons the Wither. That is the main reason anyone farms them. In the meantime, the coal and swords are minor pickups worth grabbing.
Magma Cube — Magma Cream
Magma Cubes drop Magma Cream. Bigger cubes drop more.
Magma Cream is what you brew into Awkward Potions to get Fire Resistance. Fire Resistance is the potion that makes the Nether survivable. If you have a choice between farming any Nether mob early on, Magma Cubes in Basalt Deltas are a strong pick because what they drop directly extends how long you can stay in the Nether.
Zombified Piglin — Gold Nuggets, Gold Sword, Rotten Flesh
Zombified Piglins drop Gold Nuggets, occasionally Gold Ingots, Gold Swords, and Rotten Flesh.
They are passive until you hit one — then all nearby ones aggro at once. If you are going to farm them, do it intentionally and have an escape route ready. The gold is useful for Piglin bartering, which can produce Crying Obsidian, Fire Resistance Potions, and Ender Pearls among other things.
Hoglin — Raw Porkchop, Leather
Hoglins drop Raw Porkchops (2-4) and Leather (0-1).
This matters more than it sounds. Hoglins are the only source of food in the Nether. If you are planning extended Nether sessions without bringing food from the Overworld, Hoglins are your supply line. They run from Warped Fungi, so carrying a few stems gives you a way to control the encounter.
Strider — String
Striders drop String when killed.
String is not particularly rare, but Striders spawn in lava lakes throughout the Nether, and sometimes you are already fighting one you were trying to ride. String goes toward bows, wool, and fishing rods. Minor pickup, worth grabbing.
Piglin — Barter, not drop
Piglins do not have a combat drop table worth farming. They are a barter mob — throw them a Gold Ingot and they trade you something from their loot table, which includes Crying Obsidian, Fire Resistance Potions, Gravel, Arrows, and about a dozen other items.
Do not fight adult Piglins unless you have to. Trade with them.
Common mistakes
- Walking away from a Ghast kill over lava. The tear falls. It hits lava. It is gone. Stay close enough to collect before it despawns or drops out of reach.
- Farming Wither Skeleton Skulls without Looting enchantment. At base 2.5%, you can kill 40 Wither Skeletons and get one skull. Looting III raises this to about 5.5%. It is still slow but not depressing.
- Ignoring Magma Cubes early. They drop the ingredient for Fire Resistance. That potion changes how dangerous the Nether feels. Farm them before you explore Bastions.
- Punching Zombified Piglins near a group. They all aggro. It is not like fighting one. Have a door or barrier between you before engaging.
- Not using Looting on any of these farms. Looting I-III significantly increases rare drops across the board. Enchant your sword.
A closing thought
The Nether works like a supply chain. Each mob drops something that feeds into the next capability. You kill a Blaze, you get rods, you build a stand, you brew potions, you can stay longer, you can go deeper, you can fight harder things.
The drops are not just loot. They are the progression system.
