Before You Fight the Wither — A Checklist Kids Actually Need

TL;DR: The Wither hits hard, fast, and gives you Wither status (like poison but worse). The safe version: dig underground, place in a small room, fight in a tight space where it can't fly. Full checklist below.

The Wither is not like other Minecraft bosses. It flies. It shoots. It has three heads. The damage it does isn't just hearts — it gives you Wither status effect, which turns your health bar black and ticks you down even when you're not being hit.

Most kids fight it in an open field and die immediately. Here is the approach that actually works.

Pre-fight checklist

Gear:

  • Full diamond or netherite armor, all 4 pieces
  • A diamond or netherite sword, Smite V preferred (Wither is undead)
  • Bow with Power IV+ and Infinity (or at least 64 arrows)
  • Milk buckets — 3 minimum. Milk cures Wither effect.
  • Fire resistance potions — 2 minimum
  • Strength II potion — optional but useful
  • Healing potions — 4 minimum
  • Golden apples — 4, for emergency health regen
  • Food — 2 stacks of golden carrots or cooked porkchops

The arena:

  • Dig a small room underground. 5×5×3 is enough.
  • Line the walls with obsidian if you have it — the Wither breaks almost every block, but obsidian holds.
  • If no obsidian: bedrock (go to Y=5 in the overworld) works. Bedrock cannot be broken.
  • Place the room at least 40 blocks underground. This limits the Wither's movement.

The summoning setup:

  • Three Wither Skeleton skulls
  • 4 soul sand or soul soil in a T shape

The fight

When you place the third skull, step back 5 blocks immediately. The Wither spawns with an explosion.

Phase 1 (full health): use your bow. Stay back. Arrow it down to 50% health.

At 50%: it loses its armor. Switch to sword. Get close and hit it as many times as you can before it resets. Drink milk if the Wither effect activates.

Phase 2 (50% health and below): only melee and arrows work. Potions also work. It becomes easier to hit once it's in close range.

Drink your healing potions freely. Milk the Wither effect immediately when it appears.

When it dies: 1 Nether Star drops. You can't mine it — it's already on the ground.

What the Nether Star does

Crafted into a Beacon. The Beacon gives you persistent status effects (speed, haste, regeneration, strength) in a radius around it. For a family server, one beacon changes the quality of life for every player.

Common mistakes

  • Fighting in open air. The Wither flies. You can't chase it. The underground room keeps it in range.
  • No milk. Wither effect kills you through full health if you don't cure it.
  • Not pre-making healing potions. You won't have time to brew during the fight.
  • Forgetting the Smite enchantment. Smite does 2.5× damage against undead, which includes the Wither.
  • Panicking at Phase 2. Phase 2 is actually easier once you're close. Stay calm.

A closing thought

The Wither fight is the first genuinely hard moment in vanilla Minecraft — harder than the Ender Dragon, honestly. Preparation is what separates players who beat it on their first try from players who die repeatedly.

Making the checklist is the game. The fight itself is just execution.

Pair with The Wither Family Fight for the co-op version, and Netherite Armor to confirm your gear is fight-ready.
