TL;DR: A 5-day Nether building challenge. Day 1: emergency bunker (safety). Day 2: Elevated platform (perspective). Day 3: Resource station (function). Day 4: Biome-specific build (aesthetics). Day 5: One build you design yourself (synthesis). Monday through Friday. No cheating.
Five days. Five different things the Nether teaches about building.
Day 1 (Monday) — Emergency Bunker
What it teaches: Safety first. Function over form.
Materials: 32 cobblestone, 1 door.
The build: Find a netherrack wall. Mine 3 blocks deep, 3 wide, 3 high. Place a door. Add 2 torches on the ceiling.
Time limit: 15 minutes.
Success metric: Survive inside it for 5 minutes while a Ghast tries to hit it. The cobblestone walls hold. You're safe.
The lesson: You don't need a beautiful base to survive. You need a functional one.
Day 2 (Tuesday) — Elevated Platform
What it teaches: Perspective and height.
Materials: 48 cobblestone (or any non-flammable block), 1 ladder or stair setup.
The build: Find a high point 15+ blocks above the lava sea. Build a 5×5 platform. Add a 1-block railing around the edge. Build ladder access from below.
Time limit: 20 minutes.
Success metric: From the platform, you can see: (a) your portal direction, (b) at least one Ghast in the sky, (c) a Strider walking across lava below.
The lesson: Height changes information. What you can see from 15 blocks up is different from what you can see at ground level. Good Nether navigation requires this perspective.
Day 3 (Wednesday) — Resource Station
What it teaches: Function before aesthetics.
Materials: 32 cobblestone (walls), 4 chests, 4 signs, 1 crafting table, 1 furnace, 1 brewing stand (if you have blaze rods).
The build: A 5×7 room. One wall for organized storage: 4 chests labeled "Nether wart," "Blaze rods," "Soul sand," "Misc." One wall for crafting: crafting table + furnace. One wall for brewing (if you have rods): brewing stand + space for potions.
Time limit: 25 minutes.
Success metric: Every item from your Nether trips goes into a labeled chest in under 30 seconds. Nothing is mixed.
The lesson: Organization is its own kind of build. A base isn't finished when it has walls — it's finished when it works.
Day 4 (Thursday) — Biome-Specific Build
What it teaches: Adapting to material constraints.
The rule: You can only use blocks found in one specific Nether biome. No cobblestone imported from the Overworld. No quartz from the Nether Wastes if you're in the Basalt Deltas.
Pick your biome:
- Crimson Forest: crimson stem, crimson planks, shroomlight, warped roots
- Warped Forest: warped stem, warped wart blocks, cyan tones
- Soul Sand Valley: soul sand, soul soil, bone, blue glass
- Basalt Deltas: basalt, blackstone, smooth basalt, magma blocks
- Nether Wastes: netherrack, nether brick (mine it from a Fortress), quartz
Time limit: 35 minutes.
Success metric: The build looks like it belongs in that biome. Someone looking at a screenshot should be able to identify the biome from the build's palette.
The lesson: Constraints reveal creativity. The palette of each biome has its own character. Working within it teaches you the character.
Day 5 (Friday) — Your Design
What it teaches: Synthesis.
The rule: Build whatever you want. No time limit. No material restriction. No template.
But: You must have a reason. Before building, write down:
- What is this base for?
- Who lives here?
- What does it need to have?
- What should it feel like?
Success metric: At the end of the session, your build answers all four questions. Someone who reads your description before seeing the build says "I see it."
The lesson: Days 1-4 taught you different things the Nether builds teach. Day 5 asks you to put them together into something that's yours.
After Friday
If you did all five: write down what surprised you. Which day was hardest? Which was most satisfying? One sentence per day.
If you want to do it again: swap the biome on Day 4. Invent a new constraint for Day 3. Make Day 1 harder: 10-minute bunker.
The five-day format works for almost any creative skill. Take a narrower problem each day. Expand on day 5.
