soul-sand

TL;DR: Soul Sand drops your walking speed by about half, creates upward bubble columns underwater, and is one of three blocks needed to summon the Wither. It crafts Soul Torches and grows Nether Wart.

What it does

Three behaviors: slows movement to ~50%, creates upward bubble columns when surrounded by water, base block for Wither summon (4 in T-shape + 3 Wither Skeleton skulls).

Accepts Nether Wart as planted crop. Only on Soul Sand, never on dirt or Soul Soil. Reason most early-game brewing requires a Nether trip first.

Soul Torches: regular torch + 1 Soul Sand. Slightly dimmer (level 10 vs 14). Piglins ignore them.

How to get it

Soul Sand Valleys (most common — that distinctive blue-fog biome). Less common: Nether Wastes around lava lakes. Rare: Bastion Remnants and Nether Fortresses.

Shovel works. No Silk Touch needed.

Don't confuse with Soul Soil. Soul Sand has more pronounced face indentations. Walk on a block — if you don't slow down, it's Soul Soil.

Best uses

Three big ones:

Mob farms. Soul Sand under water = upward elevator that brings hostile mobs to a kill chamber. Almost every iron/gold farm built since 2018 relies on this.

Wither summoning. Four blocks. Heads are the bottleneck (2.5% drop, ~5.5% with Looting III).

Nether Wart farming. 9×9 grid in low-light room. Brewing essential — base for Awkward Potion, what every other potion is built on.

Lore color

The faces in Soul Sand are not abstract. They're meant to be faces. Someone — or several someones — is buried inside the block. Mojang has always been deliberately vague.

Common mistakes

  • Walking onto Soul Sand while being chased by a Hoglin
  • Confusing Soul Sand and Soul Soil for Wither summoning (only Soul Sand works)
  • Trying to grow Nether Wart on Soul Soil
  • Mining Soul Sand under existing water in mob farms (bubble column dies)
