Before every Nether trip: check this list. Takes 30 seconds.
TL;DR
What you bring into the Nether depends on what you're doing there. A quick piglin trade is not the same trip as clearing a Fortress. Pack for the trip you're taking, not for "the Nether" in general.
Why packing matters more in the Nether
The Nether has no beds. No beds means no respawn point inside the Nether unless you set a Respawn Anchor. Lava is everywhere. The map doesn't work. Portals can drop you in the wrong place.
None of that is a reason to stay home. It's a reason to bring the right things before you leave.
Five trip types are listed below. Find the one that matches what you're doing today. If you're not sure, default to Standard Exploration — it covers most situations without overloading your inventory.
Trip 1: Quick resource run (15 minutes)
You need nether quartz, gravel, or a specific block. You know roughly where to go. You're not exploring.
- 16 golden carrots or 32 cooked porkchops
- Fire resistance potions x2 (4 minutes each)
- Stone pickaxe x2 (iron or diamond if mining netherite)
- Flint and steel x1
- Obsidian x4 (emergency portal repair)
- Compass (to point back toward your portal — set your lodestone first)
That's it. Lean pack for a lean trip.
Trip 2: Standard exploration (30-45 minutes)
You're mapping new territory, looking for a Fortress or Bastion, or building out your Nether road network.
- 32 golden carrots or 64 cooked porkchops
- Fire resistance potions x4
- Golden armor (full set — piglins won't attack)
- Iron sword + bow + 32 arrows
- Stone pickaxe x2, iron pickaxe x1
- Flint and steel x1
- Obsidian x8
- Carved pumpkin (Endermen won't aggro if you're wearing it)
- Respawn Anchor + 4 glowstone (set your spawn once you're settled in a safe spot)
Trip 3: Fortress clear (60 minutes or more)
You're going in to clear blaze spawners, loot chests, and beat the place. Plan for combat.
- 64 golden carrots or 2 stacks of cooked porkchops
- Fire resistance potions x8 (you will fall in lava at least once)
- Golden armor (full set)
- Diamond sword with Sharpness if you have it
- Bow + 64 arrows
- Shield x1
- Iron pickaxe x2
- Ender pearls x8 (escape option and gap-closing)
- Flint and steel x1
- Obsidian x8
- Torch x32 (mark your path through the Fortress — it loops back on itself)
Trip 4: Ancient debris mining (60 minutes or more)
You're going deep. Y=15. Bring TNT or beds (you know what beds do down here). This trip is about efficiency and survival in tight lava-adjacent tunnels.
- 64 golden carrots
- Fire resistance potions x8
- Golden armor (full set — you will pass piglins en route)
- Diamond pickaxe with Efficiency III or better
- TNT x32 OR beds x8 (beds explode in the Nether — useful for strip mining)
- Flint and steel x1
- Water bucket x1 (converts lava to obsidian if you need it)
- Torch x64
- Obsidian x8
- Chest x2 (set a temporary storage cache at your mining site)
Trip 5: Family server visit (any length)
You're playing with others — parents, siblings, server friends. The packing list shifts because you're not alone.
- 32 golden carrots or your preferred food
- Fire resistance potions x2 (others can share if someone brought more)
- Golden armor OR whatever armor you have — coordinate with your group
- Communicating device if playing on console or cross-platform (Discord, texting, whatever your family uses)
- A clear plan for where to meet if someone gets separated
- Screenshot of your portal coordinates before you leave
The last item is the most important. Write down your portal coords. Put them in the chat. "Portal at X: -400, Z: 250" is three seconds of work that saves 20 minutes of wandering.
Four common mistakes
- Bringing a bed instead of a Respawn Anchor. Beds explode in the Nether. Respawn Anchors are what you actually want. They need glowstone to charge.
- Forgetting flint and steel. Your portal can go out. Ghast fireballs do it all the time. Always carry one.
- Bringing too little food. The Nether drains hunger through combat and fall damage. Double what you think you need.
- No obsidian for emergency repairs. If your portal is completely destroyed by a Ghast and you have no obsidian, you are building a new portal from scratch. Four blocks minimum, eight is better.
Closing thought
The players who have the worst time in the Nether aren't the ones who go in unprepared. They're the ones who go in with the wrong pack for the trip they're actually taking. A fortress run needs eight fire resistance potions, not two. A quick resource grab doesn't need a full war chest.
Know your trip. Pack for that trip. Come back with what you went for.
