TL;DR: The Nether went from 1 biome in 2010 (Fortresses arrived in 2011) to 5 biomes + Bastions + Ruined Portals + Netherite + major mob overhaul (2020). The Nether Update (Java 1.16) in 2020 is the biggest single addition the Nether ever received.
The Nether has been in Minecraft since 2010, when it arrived in the Alpha Halloween Update. It looked very different then. Understanding what changed — and when — helps you appreciate why it is the way it is.
2010 — The original Nether
The original Nether was one biome: netherrack everywhere, Ghasts floating through big cave-like spaces (the Nether has no sky), Zombie Pigmen walking around (today they are called Zombified Piglins). No Fortresses yet in the earliest versions.
The original Nether had:
- 1 biome (it is called Nether Wastes today)
- Ghasts, Zombie Pigmen
- Netherrack, Glowstone, and Nether portals
- Soul Sand (no Soul Soil yet)
- No Fortresses, Blazes, or Nether Wart yet (those came in 2011)
2011 — Nether Fortresses
Nether Fortresses arrived in late 2011. They were tested first in a Java version called Beta 1.9 Prerelease (September), then released to everyone as Minecraft 1.0.0 (November). Along with Fortresses, the Nether got Blazes and their spawners, Magma Cubes, and Nether Wart.
2012 — Wither Skeletons
Wither Skeletons were added the next year, in 2012 (Java 1.4.2). After that, they spawned in Fortresses.
2013 — Nether quartz
Nether Quartz Ore was added to the Nether in Java Edition 1.5. Mine it with a pickaxe to get Nether quartz. The Nether was still just one biome, though.
2016 — Nether Wart Blocks and Red Nether Bricks
Nether Wart Blocks were added as decorative blocks. The lore-adjacent addition: you can now craft and build with large masses of wart, suggesting the Nether has a more complex biological system than just flat netherrack.
Red Nether Bricks (a decorative cousin of Nether Bricks) and Magma Blocks came in the same Java Edition update, 1.10. Red Nether Bricks never appear in the world on their own; you always craft them. Nether Wart Blocks were craft-only at first too, until 2020, when they started growing naturally in Crimson Forests. (Bedrock Edition got them later, in version 1.1.3.)
2020 — The Nether Update (Java 1.16)
The most significant Nether overhaul in Minecraft's history. A single update added:
4 new biomes:
- Crimson Forest (red, Hoglins and Piglins)
- Warped Forest (teal, Endermen)
- Soul Sand Valley (pale blue, Skeletons)
- Basalt Deltas (dark gray, Magma Cubes)
New mobs (and one new name):
- Piglins (they live in Crimson Forests, Nether Wastes, and Bastions, and you can barter with them using gold ingots)
- Hoglins (the food source)
- Striders (lava-walking)
- Piglin Brutes (Bastion guards, added a little later in 2020)
- Zombified Piglins (not a new mob! These are the old Zombie Pigmen, renamed in 2020)
New structures:
- Bastion Remnants
- Ruined Portals
New materials:
- Netherite (replaces diamond as the top gear tier)
- Ancient debris (the source)
- Blackstone, Gilded Blackstone
- Crimson and Warped Stems and Planks (wood-like blocks from giant Nether fungi that don't catch fire)
- Soul Soil (different from Soul Sand — doesn't slow movement)
- Crying Obsidian
- Respawn Anchor
New blocks:
- Chain blocks
- Shroomlight
- Basalt variants
- Polished Blackstone variants
Why it matters for players today
Before 2020: the Nether was a resource dimension. You went in, got Nether Wart and Blaze rods, left. There was one biome, no culture, no complexity.
After 2020: the Nether is a world. It has civilizations (Piglins in Bastions), ecology (Hoglins, Striders), exploration objectives (5 biomes with different resources and aesthetics), and its own progression tier (Netherite).
The Bedtime in the Nether lore is built on the 2020+ Nether. The stories couldn't exist in the pre-2020 version.
What might come next
Mojang has kept adding to the Nether since 2020. For example, dried ghasts (which spawn in Nether fossils) arrived in Java Edition 1.21.6 in 2025. The Nether still has relatively few unique mobs compared to the Overworld. Fun guesses for the future (nothing is promised): new Nether structures, new mob variants, more Bastion types.
For now: the 2020 Nether Update is the biggest Nether makeover so far.
A closing thought
The Nether Update is a good reminder that Minecraft is a game actively in development. The tools, biomes, and mobs we take for granted today were once absent. The players who discover Minecraft in 2030 will take things for granted that haven't been added yet.
