How Nether Mob Spawners Work — Blaze, Wither Skeleton, and More

TL;DR: Blaze spawners are in Nether Fortresses, on raised stone platforms. Stay within 16 blocks or they stop. They spawn 4 Blazes per cycle. Build a shelter around them, stand below the cage, and collect rods efficiently.

Spawners are orange glowing cages with a rotating mob model inside. In the Nether, you'll encounter Blaze spawners in Nether Fortresses. These are the best source of Blaze rods in vanilla survival.

Finding the spawner

Nether Fortress spawners sit on small stone platforms. Look for raised areas with 4 stone pillars around a glowing cage. They're usually in enclosed rooms, not on open bridges.

There are typically 2-3 Blaze spawners per Fortress, scattered through the interior.

Activation range

A spawner activates when a player is within 16 blocks. It deactivates beyond that range.

To use a spawner efficiently: stay within 16 blocks at all times. If you step outside that radius, the spawner stops, the Blaze timer resets, and you have to wait for it to cycle again when you return.

The stand-below method

The most efficient Blaze farming position is one block below the spawner cage level.

Why: Blazes spawn inside the cage and float upward and outward. When you stand below, they descend toward you. You get the first hit in the standing position — safer than eye-level encounters.

Position yourself: dig 1 block down below the platform, or find a wall adjacent to the platform at -1 height. Stay in that position. Blazes fly to you.

Building a small arena

A simple 5×5 enclosed area around the spawner makes farming much more efficient:

  1. Clear the area around the spawner platform
  2. Build walls 3-4 blocks high on all sides
  3. Add a ceiling (keeps Blazes from flying away)
  4. Leave 1-2 gaps at your "strike zone" level for hitting

This prevents Blazes from wandering and keeps all their drops in one spot.

Silk Touch and spawners

Silk Touch doesn't let you pick up spawners. They're permanently fixed. If you break a spawner, it's gone — you lose that resource forever.

Don't break Blaze spawners. Farm them for as long as you need.

Piglin and Wither Skeleton spawners

Wither Skeleton "spawners" aren't actual spawner blocks — Wither Skeletons spawn naturally throughout Fortresses at any spawn-eligible surface. There's no cage to find.

Some Fortresses generate Blaze spawners as their only actual spawner blocks.

Common mistakes

  • Breaking the spawner. Never. It gives no materials and removes your best Blaze farm.
  • Standing too far away. The 16-block range matters. If you're fighting somewhere else, the spawner stops generating.
  • Not having fire resistance. Blazes set you on fire. Fire resistance prevents this entirely.
  • Trying to fight Blazes in the open Fortress corridor. They float everywhere and you can't track them. The enclosed arena is far more controllable.

A closing thought

Spawners reward engineering over combat. The player who builds the right arena beats the player who has the right sword. In the Nether, that principle applies a lot: preparation beats reaction.
