nether-quartz-ore

TL;DR: Nether Quartz Ore drops Nether Quartz with any wooden-or-better pickaxe. Generates abundantly in Nether Wastes and most non-Soul biomes. Quartz is the backbone of three critical redstone components — Comparator, Observer, Daylight Detector.

What it does

Chunk of Netherrack with white crystalline veins. Mine with wood-tier pickaxe or higher → drops one Nether Quartz item. Fortune III caps at 4 quartz per ore on average, max 5.

Crafts to: Block of Quartz (4 in 2x2), Quartz Slabs/Stairs/Pillars/Chiseled/Smooth variants.

Critical recipes:

  • Daylight Detector (3 wood slabs + 3 quartz + 3 nether quartz)
  • Comparator (3 stone + 3 redstone torches + 1 nether quartz)
  • Observer (6 cobblestone + 2 redstone dust + 1 nether quartz)

Without Quartz, no automated farms, no compact redstone clocks, no advanced sorting systems.

Only ore in the Nether that drops items rather than blocks (Ancient Debris drops itself).

How to get it

Strip-mine in Nether Wastes or Crimson/Warped Forests. Generates everywhere except Soul Sand Valleys and Basalt Deltas, in massive quantities.

Surface scrape. Fastest casual method. Walk Nether Wastes surface, mine every visible cluster. 10-min scrape = 2-3 stacks.

Tunnel mining. Less efficient than surface scrape because quartz is so common.

TNT/bed mining. For absolute bulk. Bed-bomb a strip — dozens of ore blocks per blast.

Fortune III is the single biggest yield multiplier. Fortune III iron pickaxe outpaces unenchanted netherite pickaxe by ~2.5×.

Best uses

Redstone components. Comparators, Observers, Daylight Detectors. Most automated farms — sugarcane, kelp, pumpkin, melon, item sorters — depend on Observers.

Block of Quartz for builds. Pure white, smooth, slightly geometric. Pairs with Blackstone for high-contrast architecture.

Smooth Quartz (smelt Block of Quartz) — even cleaner. Best slab block for clean modern builds.

Trading currency in multiplayer servers — bulk-needed and travel-cost is real.

Lore color

Pure white in a dimension that's otherwise red, black, brown, lava-orange. Almost glows even when it isn't lit. Lore-wise, the implication is quartz is older than the Nether — fossilized bones of a place that existed before the fire.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to mine quartz with wooden pickaxe and being surprised it works (it does — quartz is wood-tier)
  • Forgetting quartz drops as item, not block (Silk Touch needed for the block itself)
  • Building a daylight sensor in the Nether (doesn't detect time of day — no day/night cycle in the Nether)
  • Stockpiling raw quartz without crafting redstone components
