TL;DR: Blackstone is the Nether's cobblestone equivalent. Same crafting role, same mining tier, but darker and rarer. Generates in Basalt Deltas and Bastion Remnants. Polished and chiseled variants are some of the best decorative blocks in the game.
What it does
Behaves almost identically to cobblestone. Crafts stone-tier tools, works in furnace recipes that require cobblestone, repairs stone tools at anvil. Crafts back into Polished Blackstone (4 in square), Polished Brick (4 polished in square), Chiseled Polished Blackstone (2 brick slabs vertically). Stair/slab/wall variants exist for all four tiers.
Doesn't smelt — there's no "smooth blackstone." Polished variants are the smooth-stone equivalent.
Blast resistance 6 (same as cobblestone).
How to get it
Basalt Deltas. Black-and-orange biome with falling ash. Generates in raw form across the surface. Risky — Magma Cubes spawn aggressively, terrain is jagged with constant lava fall. Bring fire resistance.
Bastion Remnants. Built almost entirely of Blackstone variants — Polished, Brick, Chiseled, Gilded. Mine the structure itself, but fight Piglins, Brutes, Hoglins. Worthwhile for pre-polished variants.
Ruined Portals. Often have small Blackstone deposits, sometimes Gilded Blackstone (small chance to drop gold nuggets).
Wooden pickaxe is enough. Stone pickaxe drops faster.
Yield: Basalt Deltas surface trip = 4-6 stacks in 20 min. Bastion clear = 10+ stacks but takes longer.
Best uses
Substitute for cobblestone in Nether builds. Same recipes, much darker palette.
Polished Blackstone Bricks for grand architecture. One of the best three or four building blocks for serious builders. Deep black-gray with subtle banding. Pairs with Glowstone (warm orange against cold dark) and Soul Lanterns (ghostly blue).
Chiseled Polished Blackstone for accents. Face-like motif — imperial, slightly menacing. Good for entryways, fortress walls.
Stone-tier tools in a pinch.
Lore color
Blackstone looks like cobblestone that lived through something. Same chunky, mortared-fragment texture, but the color reads as scorched. Bastions are built from it almost exclusively, suggesting whoever (or whatever) built those structures had access to a lot of it.
Common mistakes
- Confusing raw Blackstone with the Polished variant
- Trying to mine Gilded Blackstone with Silk Touch (gold drop only with normal mining + Fortune)
- Trying to smelt it (no recipe)
- Replacing all cobblestone with Blackstone aesthetically without checking recipe inputs
