TL;DR: Glowstone hangs from Nether ceilings, glows at light level 15, drops 2-4 dust per block (4 with Fortune III). Charges Respawn Anchors, brews Potions of Strength, crafts back into a block.
What it does
Light level 15 (max). Same as Jack o' Lantern, brighter than torches and Sea Lanterns.
Mine it: shatters. Default 2-4 Glowstone Dust drop. Fortune III reliably gives 4 dust per block. 4 dust → 1 Glowstone block. Fortune III breaks even — Silk Touch is most efficient if you want the block intact.
Dust uses: charging Respawn Anchor (4 Glowstone blocks needed for full charge), brewing Strength potions and Tier-II potion upgrades.
How to get it
Hangs from ceilings — pillaring required.
Better strategy: tunnel along Nether ceiling at Y127 (just below bedrock). Glowstone clusters poke down here. Mine sideways from above — they don't fall into lava, no pillaring.
Alt sources: Piglin barter (~4.6%, dust only), Witch drops in Overworld (0-2 dust).
Best uses
Lighting. Best light source by level. Only one you can place fully embedded inside a wall or ceiling without a frame. Waterlogged-compatible.
Respawn Anchors. 6 Crying Obsidian + 3 Glowstone in smithing-table-shape. Charge with up to 4 Glowstone blocks. Each charge = one respawn. Only legitimate way to set Nether spawn.
Potion brewing. Glowstone Dust → Tier-II potion upgrade. Strength → Strength II, Speed → Speed II.
Decoration. Sealed inside building wall reads as warm interior light. Cluster in a corner with Soul Lanterns nearby — striking contrast.
Lore color
Glowstone hangs from the ceiling like clusters of frozen honey. Mojang's texture artist said the inspiration was honeycomb lit from within. Sticky golden lattice with little bits of light showing through.
Common mistakes
- Mining without Silk Touch when you wanted blocks for a Respawn Anchor
- Mining from below — dust falls into lava
- Confusing Glowstone Dust with Redstone Dust (Glowstone increases tier, Redstone extends duration)
- Placing Respawn Anchors in Overworld or End — they explode
